The Capital Malé

MalMalé is the capital of the Maldives and as such is the absolute center of the island republic. With a size of just 1.8 square kilometers (0.7 square miles), it is among the smallest capitals in the world. Due to the limited opportunities for expansion, the island has already been threatening to bust its seams for several years.

On arriving in the Maldives on the airport island of Hulhule only 500 meters (0.3 miles) away, you get a good impression of this "metropolis." Today the city has more than 100,000 residents and the government has embarked on a "land reclamation program" to give the residents more space and more opportunities for development.

The wealth which tourism has brought is easily recognized in Malé. Every inch is being developed quickly and the ministries, offices and well-known banks have established their headquarters to insure that the economic and social life of the nation will function smoothly and develop further. Malé has excellent health care and anything that can't be received or requested by the individual atolls, isn't a problem here.
